Happy Birthday!

Dear Lord we thank you this day for the life of my mother-in-law as she marks her 86th birthday. May she know the gratitude, the caring, and the love we all have for her.

From Sacred Space

Part of our prayer this Advent might be asking for the grace to live with the things that don't balance out as we would like, an acceptance of the blessings that have come our way. The graces of wisdom and insight are evident in the stories of Advent and Christmas. Isaiah, John the Baptist, Joseph, Mary and the Magi all bring their words to us, that we may learn who we are, both here and now, and as people who are called to journey on in hope.

Prayer request

Our son's father-in-law will be receiving another treatment of chemo and then is scheduled for a bone marrow transplant in a few weeks. Please continue to pray for his recovery.

Prayer Requests

Please keep Nancy Dupee in your prayers and ask God to surround her with his strength and comfort. Nancy's husband, Walter, went to the emergency room Saturday afternoon with a severe headache. An MRI that evening revealed a lesion on his brain. He slipped into a coma late Saturday night and went home to heaven yesterday (Sunday) afternoon. Nancy was blessed to have their son and daughter - from VA and MD respectively - just happen to be visiting this weekend.
An announcement of a time and day of Walter's funeral will be forthcoming. He will be interred at National Cemetery in Bushnell.
Also, Pat Miller will have outpatient surgery on Thursday in Leesburg. Pray that God will guide the surgeon's hand and that His healing Holy Spirit will be with Pat.
Pray also for Janice and Harold Collins. Janice' mother went to heaven in her sleep Saturday night. Pray that our loving and comforting Lord bless Janice in this time of need.
Gene Graham is hospitalized in The Villages. Pray for his healing and return to good health.
Bob Owens' twin brother, Dick, is close to death and will be moved to a local hospice facility today. Pray God's care and comfort upon Bob and Sara and Dick's wife, Deloris.
Finally, remember Glenda Raper in prayer later this week. Glenda and Marion have just begun attending Trinity and she will be having surgery on Thursday at Waterman Hospital in Tavares.

Prayer Request

This has been a very difficult time for my family. Sevgi's father, Halit Has, underwent heavy doses of both Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy this past week. His lymphoma, is classified as a "maltoma" has spread throughout his body. We are desperately fighting this cancer. Needless to say, this has placed an extreme amount of stress on our family. Her dad is unable to keep food and, more importantly, fluids down. We are very worried about his probability of recovery. Sevgi has been trying her best to juggle the responsibility of taking care of her dad and the girls while I am away in Germany. She is feeling a tremendous amount of pain and worry right now. We need your help, prayers and understanding in order to make it through this rough time.

Also, Sevgi's mother is in need of surgery to remove a gall stone which is causing her a great amount of pain. I don't need to explain how this compounds the health issues and stress already present. Fatma is putting off her surgery until Halit is more healthy.

Please find a way in your heart to pray for the recovery of my family.

Longfellow expressed it this way:

"Tell me not in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream,
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.

Life is real, life is earnest,
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul."

The Presence of God

Dear Lord, help me to be open to You
for this time as I put aside the cares of this world.
Fill my mind with Your peace, Your Love.

Freedom

Many countries are at this moment suffering the agonies of war.
I bow my head in thanksgiving for my freedom.
I pray for all prisoners and captives.

Consciousness

To be conscious about something is to be aware of it. Dear Lord help me to remember that You gave me life. Thank you for the gift of life. Teach me to slow down, to be still and enjoy the pleasures created for me.
To be aware of the beauty that surrounds me. The marvel of mountains, the calmness of lakes, the fragility of a flower petal. I need to remember that all these things come from you.

The Word

Luke 19, 1-10

He entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax-collector and was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, ‘Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.’ So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. All who saw it began to grumble and said, ‘He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner.’ Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, ‘Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much.’ Then Jesus said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.’

Help me, Lord, to notice how you are speaking to me.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

  • He was trying to see who Jesus was. That is my search too. You lived two millennia ago, Lord. I wish I knew what you would be like today. But when I turn to the Gospels, and seek your face, I find that you have been waiting for me, as you were looking for Zacchaeus, and call me by my name as you called him.

Conversation

Remembering that I am still in God's presence, I imagine Jesus himself standing or sitting beside me, and say whatever is on my mind, whatever is in my heart, speaking as one friend to another.

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end.

Amen

A New Beginning!

BibleGateway.com- Commentaries » 1 John 2 » Warnings Against Unfaithfulness

BibleGateway.com- Commentaries » 1 John 2 » Warnings Against Unfaithfulness: "The command do not love the world demands that we reject those ways of life which do not lead us to God or to the practice of truth, justice, righteousness and love. While this sounds easy enough in theory, it is not easy in practice. For it entails the recognition and condemnation of sin and unrighteousness. Here we can too easily fall prey to arrogant judgmentalism on the one hand or, on the other hand, to the subtle tug to let sinful behaviors pass unnoticed or unnamed in our efforts to love and accept people as they are. And yet acceptance and love of others never means that we must--or may--approve of a way of life that is inimical to God's way of light. Certainly Jesus knew his ministry to be one that exposed sin (Jn 16:8-10). Yet a ministry of exposing the unright eousness of the world's ways does not stand in contradiction to a min istry of love. For precisely by exposing sin, lies and hatred, we can become channels of God's truth, light and love, so that we enable others to live in that truth as well. But let us remember the epistle's admonitions to confess our own sins, and so let judgment begin at home."

A Prayer Room

Sacred Space - Daily Prayer Online

Sacred Space - Daily Prayer Online: "Something to think and pray about this week Ignatius Loyola spent the best of his energies on teaching people to pray. Before his conversion, his idea of prayer was reciting Our Father's and Hail Mary's. When he started to read the scriptures, he found that God was talking to him, especially through the stories about Jesus. He wrote about it later, 'God taught me like a schoolboy.' As the years passed, his prayer became more wordless - so does the prayer of many Christians as they mature in their spiritual life. Ignatius had such an appetite for prayer - such heart-wrenching delight in it - that he had to ration himself, because the tears of joy were affecting his sight. God was for him not a word but a touch. One of his friends recalled his going up to the roof of his house at night. 'He would sit there quietly, absolutely quietly. He would take off his hat and look up for a long time at the sky...and the tears would begin to flow down his cheeks like a stream, but so quietly and so gently that you heard not a sob nor a sigh nor the least possible movement of his body.'"

God Is Love

God Is Love 2: "God is Love! As such, true love -- God's love -- can be summed up in this passage of scripture: 'Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.' (1 John 4:7-11)"

Christian Quote

"We are susceptible to heretical teachings because, in one form or another, they nurture and reflect the way that we would have it be, rather than the way God has provided, which is infinitely better for us. As they lead us into the blind alleys of self-indulgence and escape from life, heresies pander to the most unworthy tendencies of the human heart."

Agape defined

Agapē (IPA: [ɑˈgɑpeɪ] or IPA: [ˈɑgəˌpeɪ]) (Gk. αγάπη ), is one of several Greek words meaning love. The word has been used in different ways by a variety of contemporary and ancient sources, including Biblical authors. Many have thought that this word represents divine, unconditional, self-sacrificing, active, volitional, thoughtful love. Greek philosophers at the time of Plato and other ancient authors use the term to denote love of a spouse or family or affection for a particular activity, in contrast to philia, an affection that could either denote brotherhood or generally a non-sexual affection, or eros, an affection of a sexual nature, usually between two unequal partners, the lover (eraste) and beloved (eromenos). The term is rarely used in ancient manuscripts. The term was used by the early Christians to refer to the special love for God and God's love for humanity, as well as the self-sacrificing love they believed all should have for each other.
